Vampire Bat (Work in Progress)

This model was inspired by the "King Kong Art of" book. It is my own take on a Vampire Bat. The base model was made in Maya and the displacement was made in MudBox.

Please scroll down to see a few of the making of steps.

April 1st 2009 : Composition, Lighting Tests, Over the Top Sub Surface and Glows!

O.K. so this is the start of the really fun part. Depending on the type of monitor you use (CRT / LCD) this image may be too dark. The whole thing will get brighter as I start to introduce the ground and BG elements. I don't want to go over the top with useless details so I'm placing a scene camera early in the process. I now know that the wings will have to be 2X the texture resolution they currently have, although with the right amount of motion blur they would be perfect right now.. The small displacement probably won't be seen through the Sub Surface area of the wings. The noise and the banding won't be featured on the final image...

I have a bat, now I need a cave!

March 30 2009: Diffuse Maps

Now that my displacement maps work and can be exported out of the sculpting software, it is now time to tackle the diffuse maps.

March 21 2009:

I've reworked the pose of the character and I've started to define the finer elements of the wings and the texture of the model. It is now ~7 Million polygons and is pushing my computer to its 32Bit limit.

February 2009: Maya Polygon Mesh

After being on ice for 6 months I've reopened this file. There's an image to be made with this!

Summer 2008 : Initial Polygon Mesh

It all starts with very few vertices. These early steps are very important.
